Bill Analysis

SB 56 would exempt the home address, home telephone number, emergency contact information, or social security number of a current or former assistant U.S. attorney, federal public defender, deputy federal public defender, or assistant federal public defender and the spouse or child of the current or former attorney or public defender from being disclosed in public records.

Vote Recommendation Notes

SB 56 would provide safety measures to ensure the identifying personal information of public defenders and their family members is not disclosed online. This would aid these public defenders in performing their judicial duty without fear of retaliation from certain individuals who have found personal information online. Texas Action supports SB 56 because it promotes individual liberty of those public servants to whom the bill pertains and is consistent with the functions of limited government.
