Bill Caption

Relating to provisions in agreements between governmental entities and professional sports teams requiring the United States national anthem to be played at team events.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 4 would prohibit a government entity from entering into an agreement with a professional sports team that requires a financial commitment from the state or any government entity as part of an agreement unless the professional sports team agrees to play the United States national anthem at the beginning of each team sporting event held at the team’s home venue or other facility controlled by the team for the event. The bill provides remedies for failure to comply with this requirement.

Vote Recommendation Notes

As SB 4 addresses a political question and does not appear to have any connection to our liberty principles, therefore Texas Action remains neutral. Our preference would be for the state avoid any kind of financial agreements with professional sports teams in the first place.
