Bill Caption

Relating to eligibility to serve as an interpreter in an election.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 331 would allow an election officer to appoint an interpreter to communicate with a voter whose language the election officer does not understand. The bill would also lay out eligibility rules for becoming an interpreter for a voter.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports SB 331 which strikes an appropriate balance by allowing an interpreter to provide ballot assistance to a voter while providing necessary restrictions to prevent that interpreter from being in a position to coerce the voter's decisions as an employer, employer's agent, or union representative. This enhances both individual liberty and limited government.
