Bill Analysis

SB 184 would require the Department of State Health Services, jointly with the Health and Human Services Commission, to prepare a report on the prevalence of eating disorders and eating disorder-related deaths in this state. Such a report would have to include regional and statewide statistics, an overview of national trends, and an overview of state-funded behavioral health treatment options. This report, and any recommendations, would have to be submitted to the legislature no later than December 1, 2023.

SB 183 would also require the Department of State Health Services to prepare a report on the prevalence of eating disorders among Texas youth. Guidelines for this report are outlined in the bill.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is opposed to SB 184 because it violates the principle of limited government. It is outside the core functions of a limited government to conduct this type of study; rather, this is a role better suited for nonprofit organizations and the healthcare industry.
