Bill Caption

Relating to disability retirement benefits for certain peace officers under the Employees Retirement System of Texas.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1071 would amend existing law to allow a peace officer who is rendered permanently disabled in the line of duty to receive a monthly amount based on the maximum salary authorized for their most recently worked position by the General Appropriations Act. This would help to make the disability retirement benefits more in line with what a person would have made had they been able to serve a full career, as well as accommodate for the increased cost of living over time.

Vote Recommendation Notes

While this bill does not appear to affect our liberty principles and we remain neutral, the policy proposed by SB 1071 is a sensible one.
