Bill Analysis

HB 547 would allow homeschooled students, or other students not otherwise enrolled in a public school, to participate in their local school's University Interscholastic League activities provided that the students meet the standard eligibility requirements of the school and other specified criteria including demonstration of grade level performance on certain standardized assessments.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports HB 547 on the principles of limited government and individual liberty. This bill limits government by removing the current restriction on homeschoolers and promotes individual liberty through allowing the student to participate in UIL activities. Homeschool families do after all pay taxes to fund public education while using little to no public education resources that their taxes fund.
