Bill Caption

Relating to the creation of the Texas Commission on Antisemitism.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 3257 would establish a Texas Commission on Antisemitism, to be administratively attached the Texas Historical Commission. This commission would conduct a study on antisemitism in Texas, provide information on and to assist in planning, coordinating, or modifying antisemitism awareness programs, and solicit volunteers to participate in commemorative events designed to enhance public awareness of the fight against antisemitism.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is opposed to HB 3257 on the principle of limited government. The creation of new government commissions has historically not been an effective means of achieving their stated goal, and provides an opportunity for the indefinite renewal/continuation of such commissions.

In the case of instruction against antisemitism (or any other discrimination based on race or ethnicity), it is important for this to be handled by parents and faith-based institutions rather than by the government. With respect to this bill, we support the mission but oppose the vessel. For these reasons we oppose HB 3257.
