Bill Analysis

Current law prohibits a county or precinct chair of a political party from running for or holding various other offices. This is commonly known as a "resign to run" or "resign to serve" provision because they must resign their position in order to run for or serve in another elected office. HB 1987 would expand that prohibition to any officer of a political party. The bill would also require that if a person is running for county or precinct chair of a political party, they must be a qualified voter of the corresponding county.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Without commenting on the underlying premise that political party officials should not be eligible to run for public office while serving in a party position, since that is not the question at hand, we remain neutral on HB 1987. Making the standard more uniform for all officials of all political parties regardless of their nominating process does not offend our liberty principles.
