Bill Caption

Relating to a specialty court program to provide victim services in sexual assault cases.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 1706 would permit counties to establish sexual assault victim services court programs. If established, a court in the county would be assigned for cases in which the person is a victim of a sexual assault and is willing to participate in the program. The judge and prosecutors would be required to have experience in sexual assault cases. Counties would be permitted to seek funds or grants from any source to fund their program.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is neutral on HB 1706 as it does not touch directly upon any of our Liberty Principles. Specialty court programs only hear existing cases referred to them. HB 1706 would merely permit counties to establish sexual assault victim services courts, rather than requiring them to.
