Bill Caption

Relating to the authorization by referendum of an optional county fee on vehicle registration in certain counties.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 156 would allow counties that border Mexico to impose an additional fee of not more than $10 for vehicle registration if approved by a majority of voters in an election. Revenue from this new fee would be used by the regional mobility authority to fund long-term transportation projects.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action opposes HB 156 for violating the principles of limited government and individual liberty. Texas motorists are already nickel-and-dimed by fees and taxes and should not be subject to the possibility of higher vehicle registration fees.
