Relating to the availability of certain information regarding early voting.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
HB 1382 would require the secretary of state to develop and maintain an online tool that allows a voter to monitor the status of the voter's application for a mail-in ballot and a voter's mail-in ballot.
The bill would require that the online tool be updated as soon as practicable upon receipt of an application for a mail-in ballot, acceptance or rejection of an application for mail-in ballot, the early voting clerk sending out a voter's mail-in ballot, receipt of a voter's marked mail-in ballot and acceptance or rejection of a voter's marked mail-in ballot.
The bill would also require early voting clerks to submit information on the roster of people who voted early, either in person or by absentee ballot, to the secretary of state.
While we appreciate that this bill would add some
transparency to mail-in voting, we have serious reservations about the security
of mail-in voting as it relates to election integrity. For this reason, we
remain neutral on HB 1382.
