Relating to the rural veterinarian incentive program.
The fiscal implications of the bill cannot be determined at
this time due to the unavailability of data related to the number of persons
that would participate in the loan repayment program and available funding for
the program.
HB 1259 moves oversight of the rural veterinarian incentive program from Texas A&M and places it under the administration of the Texas Animal Health Commission (a new commission to be created), which shall provide assistance in the repayment of student loans to qualified individuals. HB 1259 expands eligibility for the program and would require the rural veteran incentive program committee consist of the dean of each accredited college of veterinary medicine in Texas, or the dean’s designee.
Texas Action opposes HB 1259 which would grow the scope and cost of government by expanding an existing student loan subsidy program.
