Relating to the preservation and improvement of the Republic of
Texas Granite Boundary Marker.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
The Historical Commission is required to implement a provision of this Act only if the
legislature appropriates money specifically for that purpose. If the legislature does not
appropriate money specifically for that purpose, the Historical Commission may, but is not
required to, implement a provision of this Act using other appropriations available for that
purpose.
SB 907 would direct the Texas Historical Commission to design and build facilities to accommodate visitors to the Republic of Texas Granite Boundary Marker and to improve the marker and its surrounding area. This marker is the last remaining boundary marker that once separated the Republic of Texas from the United States.
The bill would additionally transfer any powers or duties related to the marker as found in other state agencies to the Commission and would allow the commission to replace the original boundary marker with a replica and preserve the original at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin. This bill authorizes THC to spend money appropriated to THC for purposes of these bill provisions, as well as to solicit and accept gifts, grants, and donations from any public or private source.
