Bill Analysis

SB 225 would create specialty license plates for recipients of the Army of Occupation Medal, and would exempt persons who apply for said license plates from the typical registration fee.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action opposes SB 225 for violating the principle of limited government. While recognizing the good intentions of this bill in highlighting the outstanding service of some of our veterans, exemptions from fees such as the one found in this bill inevitably raises the burden on other Texans. We do not oppose specialty license plates, only the special privilege of a preferred class. Fees, when necessary, should be applied in a broad-based and equal manner so as to remain fair and equal to all Texans.
