Bill Caption

Relating to a study and pilot program regarding the use of incentives to purchase certain fruits or vegetables under the supplemental nutrition assistance program.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1834 would require the Health and Human Services Commission to establish a pilot program to incentivize the purchase of certain fruits and vegetables under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and form a work group to provide input. HHSC would submit a report to the legislature.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action recommends opposing SB 1834 because it infringes upon principles of limited government and personal responsibility. It is not the proper role of the state to create incentive programs to encourage fresh produce consumption; this role is more appropriate for the private non-profit sector. This bill also detracts from an individual's responsibility to maintain a healthy diet.
