Relating to the powers and duties of the office of independent ombudsman for the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
SB 1702 would allow ombudsman for the Texas Juvenile Justice Department to inspect: a facility operated by the department; a post-adjudication secure correctional facility; a nonsecure correctional facility; and any other residential facility in which a child adjudicated as having engaged in conduct indicating a need for supervision or delinquent conduct is placed by court order. The ombudsman would also be authorized to investigate complaints alleging a violation of the rights of the children committed to or placed in a facility described by this subsection.
Texas Action supports SB 1702 because it advances our principle of limited government. The bill allows the TJJD to properly fulfill it's role in the juvenile justice system by overseeing facilities, investigating complaints, and protecting the rights of children in custody.
