Relating to the resignation or termination or nonrenewal of the contract of a superintendent of a school district.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
SB 1600 would create a procedure for school districts in the event of a superintendent resigning, being terminated, or not renewing their contract. School districts would be required to post on their website a notice if the superintendent leaving was for cause and a copy of the agreement between the school district and the superintendent, as well as require such information to be reported to the Texas Education Agency. Contracts between school districts and superintendents would be prohibited from including a confidentiality agreement regarding a resignation, termination, or non-renewal of a contract; the grounds of which the superintendent had to resign, be terminated, or have their contract renewed; or a provision prohibiting the district from posting said information online.
Texas Action recommends supporting SB 1600 because it promotes our principle of limited government. This bill would increase transparency in the terms of contracts between school districts and superintendents and help citizens be better informed about the circumstances surrounding the departure of a superintendent.
