Fiscal Notes

According to the Legislative Budget Board, no fiscal impact to the state is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1543 would require an investigator to orally notify interviewees at the beginning of an interview for a Department of Family and Protective Services investigation that the interviewee has the right to make an audio recording, and to obtain written verification from the person who is the subject of the interview that the Department employee provided the notice.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports SB 1543 because it promotes limited government and individual liberty principles by notifying individuals of their right to record interactions with DFPS investigators (a fact that many are unaware of). This bill encourages individuals to exercise that right and to keep accurate records of sensitive information for their own use and accuracy.
