Relating to the establishment of a career mentoring pilot program for certain students who are veterans.

Fiscal Notes

No fiscal impact to the state is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1538 would establish a pilot program called VetsHIRED within the Alamo Community College District. Under the pilot program, participating students who are veterans would be assigned to a "military transition consultant" to assist students in the transition from the military to civilian workforce. Students would be assigned to a cohort to meet weekly for a 10 week period for 20 hours of in-person lectures about career search strategies and strategies for college success. The pilot program would also be required to include a mentorship program to partner student veterans with business and community leaders who would guide the students into the workforce.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This pilot program does not affect our liberty principles and we remain neutral. However, we are skeptical of the necessity of such a program as there are many charitable organizations currently focused on providing these services.
