Relating to requiring certain students awarded dual credit by a public institution of higher education to complete and submit a financial aid application for higher education costs.
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
SB 1323 would require students that had completed 15 or more credit hours in dual credit courses to apply for federal student aid (FAFSA) or, if applicable, a Texas application for state financial aid (TAFSA). The parents of the student can opt the student out of the requirement.
Texas Action recommends opposing SB 1323 because it violates our principles of limited government and personal responsibility. It is not the proper role of government to require any individual to apply for financial aid. It also detracts from the personal responsibility of the student to inquire into financial aid options and make that decision for himself or herself.
