Bill Caption

Relating to the Texas college work-study program and to establishing a program for the off-campus employment of certain students at public or private institutions of higher education.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 1192 would create the Texas Working Off-Campus Reinforcing Knowledge and Skills Program that would allow the State to partially reimburse eligible entities in order to provide jobs for college students. In addition, this bill would change the requirements for institutions of higher education to provide work-study programs for students and require the participating programs to be listed online.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action remains neutral on SB 1192 because it does not affect our liberty principles. While we remain cautious about spending public funds to incentivize private businesses to hire students, THECB would use funds already appropriated for the Texas College work-study program to cover the expenses.
