Bill Caption

Relating to the creation of DNA records for certain defendants for inclusion in the DNA database system.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 979 would expand the DNA database to include people arrested or convicted of Class A misdemeanor level unlawful restraint, assault, or deadly conduct.

Vote Recommendation Notes

The DNA database was designed to collect DNA of violent felony-level criminals. Expanding this datebase to collect DNA for misdemeanor level offenses is questionable policy but ultimately a policy decision for the legislature that does not necessarily affect our liberty principles.
