Bill Caption

Relating to the prosecution of and punishment for the offense of sexual assault; enhancing a criminal penalty.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

HB 667 would increase the penalty for sexual assault of a family member from a second degree felony to a first degree felony.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action is neutral on HB 667 as it neither advances nor hinders any of our liberty principles. A second degree felony is already a significant offense with a substantial penalty. It is unclear to us whether this increased penalty will act as a deterrent or have any net beneficial result other than imprisoning people for a longer time.
