HB 374 would require a community supervision and corrections department to adopt a policy regarding scheduling of meets or visits with individuals on community supervision. The policy must require the supervision officer to take into account the defendant's work, treatment, or community service schedule when scheduling meetings or visits. A department would also be permitted to allow a defendant to report in to a supervision officer by video conference if the department determines an in-person visit or meeting is unnecessary.
Texas Action supports HB 374 because it advances the principles of personal responsibility and limited government. Community supervision visits or meetings should not prevent an individual from holding down a job or getting proper treatment because the visits interfere with his or her work, treatment, or community service schedule. A goal of an effective criminal justice system is to properly transition individuals back into society and having a job, getting treatment, and fulfilling community service requirements are a large part of successful reintegration.
