Bill Analysis

HB 2835 would create a defense to prosecution for the offense of driving with an expired license plate if the county-assessor's office in the vehicle owner's county was closed for a protracted period of time and the vehicle's registration has been expired for 30 working days or less.

Vote Recommendation Notes

Texas Action supports HB 2835 for promoting the principles of limited government and individual liberty. While simple in scope, this bill would help to ensure that Texans are not unfairly convicted of an offense which they had no way to avoid as a result of their county assessor-collector's office being closed.
