Relating to certain governmental entities subject to the sunset
review process.
Bill Analysis
HB 1550 is an omnibus sunset review bill for a multitude of state commissions, departments, agencies, and licensing boards including the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the Department of Public Safety, the Texas Veterans Commission and the Texas Medical Board. The bill would defer sunset of these entities until 2021 with no additional changes.
Vote Recommendation Notes
We oppose HB 1550 because it is not within the interest of limited government or free markets to allow these agencies, departments, commissions, and licensing boards to continue functioning without sunset review for another two years. Some of these entities should be allowed to sunset entirely while others need significant changes. For example, we have supported legislation this session to do away entirely with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners which should be allowed to expire and have its functions transferred to the Department of Licensing and Regulation. For these reasons, we oppose HB 1550.
