SB 975 would require that high speed intercity passenger railroads adhere to federal safety requirements established by the Transportation Security Administration or its successor agency. This would include establishing secured areas, conducting screenings, investigating security threat reports, and the completion of emergency management training by certain employees. Other requirements for coordinating with state agencies are also stipulated.
Private companies are capable of meeting the security needs of passengers and their business without government mandates. This bill would impose an unnecessary regulation and violate our limited government principle. Therefore, we oppose SB 975.
