Bill Caption

Relating to registration of a motor vehicle alleged to have been involved in a violation detected by a photographic traffic signal enforcement system.

Bill Analysis

Under current law a civil penalty is imposed for motor vehicle owners who fail to pay or are delinquent in payment for traffic violations detected by a photographic traffic signal enforcement system.

Currently, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles may refuse to register a motor vehicle based on the driver's delinquency.

SB 87 amends current Transportation Code by striking the provision that the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles may refuse to register a driver who is delinquent in paying civil penalties detected by a photographic traffic signal enforcement system.

Vote Recommendation Notes

We support SB 87 because this bill would limit government by preventing a person's vehicle registration renewal from being denied based on being delinquent in paying a civil fine generated by a traffic camera photo.
