Bill Caption
Relating to equal opportunity for access by home-schooled students to University Interscholastic League sponsored activities; authorizing a fee
Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
Under current law, a home-schooled student in Texas does not have access to participate in University Interscholastic League sponsored activities with public schooled students. SB 640 would require the UIL and school districts to permit participation of home-schooled students that meet the athletic, academic, and other requirements already present to participate in the program.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill supports the principles of individual liberty by allowing home-schooled students to have access to the same public school-sponsored sporting activities as public schoolers. After all, home school families do pay property taxes to school districts even though they do not attend and utilize the full benefit of their tax dollars. For this reason, we support SB 640.
