Bill Caption
Relating to expansion of a pilot program under the foundation
school program for funding prekindergarten programs provided by
certain school districts with early high school graduation
programs.
Fiscal Notes
No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
Currently, the state runs a pilot program that institutes pre-kindergarten in a county that borders the US-Mexico border. SB 2270 would expand the pre-kindergarten pilot program by having it apply to the entire Region One education service area, which is much of the Rio Grande valley and South Texas.
Vote Recommendation Notes
Expanding public prekindergarten is not the proper role of state government. This violates our limited government principle by expanding such a program that is not a core function of government. For this reason we oppose SB 2270.
