Bill Caption

Relating to the application of the financial accountability system for open enrollment charter schools to the charter school of a public senior college or university.

Bill Analysis

Under Senate Bill 1837, charter schools operated by public institutions of higher education would be evaluated for financial accountability in the same way as other open-enrollment charter schools but not assigned a financial accountability rating. This would take into account the unique financial nature of charter schools operated by institutions of higher education.

Vote Recommendation Notes

While it makes sense to make accommodations for the differences between charter schools operated by institutions of higher education and other charters operating under different financial arrangements, the changes proposed under this legislation are procedural in nature with no connection to our liberty principles. We remain neutral on SB 1837.
