Relating to the use of the fund for veterans' assistance to support veterans county service offices.

Fiscal Notes

From the LBB: no significant fiscal implication to the state is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

Under current law, the Fund for Veterans’ Assistance is appropriated to the Texas Veterans Commission. SB 1679 would require the commission to use at least 5% of the money for grants to counties that operate a veterans county service office. The grants would be used to provide direct assistance and services to veterans residing in the county served by that office.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill neither creates a new veterans preference program nor expands an existing one. It prioritizes how a portion of funds in the existing program are to be used. For these reasons we remain neutral. Nonetheless it is worth noting that this legislation does not take into account the veteran population of each county for the purposes of funding levels. This is likely to benefit counties with fewer veterans at the expense of counties with a greater number of veterans.
