Bill: SB 1214, 85(R) - 2017

Relating to a succession plan for a regional public defender’s office that primarily handles capital cases. 

This bill would allow the Texas Indigent Defense Commission to establish a succession plan to take effect only if the commissioners court in the county in which the public defender’s office is located ceases to be a party to the agreement creating or designating the regional public defender’s office. A grant may be awarded to a regional public defender’s office that primarily handles capital cases, if they adopt a succession plan. This bill contains some specific information pertaining to the succession plan. 

The administration of courts is a core function of government and it is well within the proper role of government to develop plans for situations when agreements between certain court jurisdictions expire. For fulfilling the proper role of government, we support SB 1214.
