Bill Analysis
Under current law, a county fire marshall can inspect structures for fire hazards and issue orders for corrections of such hazards. Failure to comply with an order is a Class B misdemeanor. SB 1117 would make failure to comply a Class C misdemeanor and a Class B misdemeanor if failure to comply results in a certain amount of property damage or causes harm to an individual.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill supports the principle of limited government as it would reduce the penalty for this offense and impose a reasonable scale of punishment. For this reason, we support SB 1117.
