Relating to certain lottery prize winners' choice to remain anonymous.

Fiscal Notes

From the LBB: No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

The bill would add a provision to allow certain lottery winners who win $1 million or more to remain anonymous unless they choose to receive their prize money in periodic installments, in which case the state may only disclose information on or after the 30th day after the date the person claims their prize if they choose to remain anonymous. It would not prohibit the release of the winner's city or county of residence or prohibit the commission from releasing information to the Health and Human Services Commission.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill is in keeping with limited government and individual liberty; it is an individual's right to remain anonymous if they so choose; the government should not have the ability to disclose confidential information without an individual's consent, regardless of if they are a lottery winner or not. For this reason, we support this bill.
