Bill Analysis

HB 501 would amend the Government Code pertaining to financial statements filed by certain public officials and candidates for elected office to add that if a contract exceeds $10,000 the following must be reported: the name of each party in the contract for the sale of $2,500 or more, and if the individual, the individual’s family, or business entity if they have at least 50% interest with a governmental entity or a person who contracts with the governmental entity. Also if a member of the legislature provides bond counsel services the information on the name and date of the issuance, the amount, and the amount of fees must be reported. Finally, any compensation for legal referrals must be reported.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill enhances our limited government principle by taking a measure to increase transparency of public officers and candidates on financial disclosure forms. We support HB 501.
