Bill Analysis

This bill would modify provisions related to the Texas Crime Stoppers Council. Under current law, the executive director of the criminal justice division of the governor’s office and the Texas Crime Stoppers Council designate a person to serve as the director. The director must then be approved by the governor. If this bill passes, the executive director would merely have to seek input from the council and the director would not have to be approved by the governor.

This bill would also modernize the portion of the code relating to a toll-free telephone service. The updates would allow for other appropriate statewide crime reporting systems to allow information about criminal acts to be reported to the council. The reporting systems would have to be accessible at all times. This bill also makes conforming changes.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill is largely procedural, however even the non-procedural changes it would make do not have a measurable impact on our liberty principles, therefore we will remain neutral.
