Bill Analysis
HB 3484 would add a subsection to the Tax Code that would authorize certain municipalities to use the revenue collected from the hotel occupancy tax for sports facilities and fields for the purpose of promoting tourism and the convention and hotel industry.
This bill is a local bracketed bill which would only pertain to certain municipalities eligible to use the funds collect to encourage tourism and develop municipally owned convention centers and sports-related facilities.
Vote Recommendation Notes
The role of a limited government is not to grow tourism or to subsidize certain events facilities with taxpayer money. Like any city whose concern is to see more tourists come and visit, a better solution would be the repeal of the municipal hotel occupancy tax which would encourage individuals to stay longer in hotels and to spend more of their money within the local economy, and in tourism events and activities. Such a situation would benefit tourists, municipalities, and their communities and would also favor a limited government and the free market system.
For these reasons, we oppose HB 3484.
