Relating to the establishment of a pilot program under which a
licensed hospital may offer dual credit courses to public high
school students.

Bill Analysis
HBl 2937 would institute a dual credit medical pilot program. High school students would be able to work in a hospital for college credit for the purposes of learning to work in the medical field. Students participating in the
medical dual credit program could not be charged for tuition, fees, or required textbooks or other
instructional materials; school districts would be required to cover these costs to the extent that
they were not waived by the hospital offering the program.
Vote Recommendation Notes
Like other bills, providing greater access to career options for students in high school and preparing them for what lies ahead in a career or further higher education goals is an improvement of our educational system. However, such a program is not without faults. In particular, providing such courses free of cost seems like a door left open for the state to subsidize the program given the specialized nature of medical classes. So for these reasons, we will remain neutral on HB 2937.
