Bill Caption
Relating to the purchase of iron and steel products made in the United States for certain governmental entity projects.
Fiscal Notes
From the LBB: depending upon the level of anticipated future building, structure, or infrastructure
construction, there could be an indeterminate fiscal impact to the state.
Bill Analysis
HB 2780 would amend the Government Code to add that the uniform conditions for a project in which iron or steel products will be used must require any iron or steel product in the project be produced in the United States, unless there is not a sufficient quantity, the cost is increased by 20% or more, or it is not in the public interest.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This bill violates our limited government principle by decreasing efficiency with placing requirements on where iron and steel can be produced for government contracts likely increasing government spending on projects. For these reasons, we oppose HB 2780.
