Bill Analysis

This bill would modify the punishment for tampering with a government record. Under current law, tampering with a government record is punishable as a Class A misdemeanor. This bill would stipulate that if an individual tampers with a payroll document requesting payment of compensation to a state officer or employee, that individual would face a charge of state jail felony.

Vote Recommendation Notes

While we are generally wary of sentence enhancements, these are sensitive documents and tampering with them is a serious offense. Without the benefit of knowing the extent to which this is currently a problem it is difficult to determine whether this sentence enhancement is appropriate. We remain neutral.
