Bill Caption

Relating to use of compensatory education allotment funding to provide assistance to students at risk of dropping out of school who are pregnant or who are parents.

Fiscal Notes

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

This bill would allow compensatory education funds to be used to help pregnant students and students who are parents continue their education by helping those women pay for child-care costs.

Vote Recommendation Notes

HB 223 would further designate specific uses of money that is allotted to school district to help at-risk students continue their education rather than drop out. The fund already exists and its purpose and intent is clear. This legislation appears to be consistent with the purpose and intent of the fund without increasing actual funding levels. For this reason we have no objection to expanding the specific enumerated uses of the fund to include this purpose. This should not be considered an endorsement of whether the fund should exist in the first place.
