Relating to the use of epinephrine auto-injectors on private school
campuses and at or in transit to or from off-campus school events.

Bill Analysis
Currently, only public and charter schools are authorized to adopt and implement a policy regarding the use of epinephrine auto-injectors. This bill would expand existing authority for schools to obtain and provide for the use of epinephrine auto-injectors to include private schools. Should a private school choose to participate, they would be required follow the same rules as public and open-enrollment charter schools.
Vote Recommendation Notes
This is a voluntary program that would allow private schools to take on this responsibility if they so choose. Epinephrine auto-injectors, commonly called EpiPens, can be life saving devices when a child is having a severe allergic reaction. This bill would provide private schools more freedom to care for their students which supports our principle of limited government by lifting a current restriction. Therefore, we support SB 579.
