Bill Caption
Relating to the use of municipal hotel occupancy tax revenue by
certain municipalities.
Fiscal Notes
No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.
Bill Analysis
HB 1494 is a bracketed bill for the City of Rockport. This bill would allow the municipality to allocate up to 30 percent of revenue from hotel occupancy taxes to the encouragement of the arts, subject to certain conditions.
Vote Recommendation Notes
Despite its local and limited nature, this bill would infringe on the principle of limited government by authorizing the application of hotel occupancy tax revenue towards the promotion of art, which is not within the proper role of government. For this reason, we oppose HB 1494.
