Bill Analysis

This bill would mandate that public school curriculum include emphasize "an understanding of the principles underlying the United States form of government, including the study of the Founding Fathers of the United States, the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers."

Vote Recommendation Notes

We support this legislation. A quality public education must include a strong curriculum on American history so that students can fully understand the principles underlying our form of government, know what makes it unique in world history, understand why it has been successful, and perpetuate those principles as they move into adulthood. We support this legislation because it enhances a core aspect of public education which is a core function of state government.

We do note a word of caution that the quality of this curriculum will be entirely dependent on the people and process involved in creating and approving it. With that noted, we remain in favor of HB 1291.
