Bill Caption

Relating to increasing the amount of burial benefits required to be paid by an insurance carrier under the workers' compensation system.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 653 would increase the minimum amount of workers’ compensation coverage for burial benefits from $6,000 to $10,000. The legislation would require insurance carriers providing workers’ compensation coverage to either pay the actual costs of funeral expenses or $10,000, whichever is less.

Vote Recommendation Notes

We are neutral on SB 653 because it makes changes to workers’ compensation, which is a state run program that forces workers to participate. Currently, workers’ compensation restricts an injured worker’s access to the courts to file a suit. Worker's compensation does not currently operate in a free market environment so these updated regulations do not infringe on our free market principle.
