Bill Caption

Relating to the authority of certain contiguous municipalities to agree to extend municipal court jurisdiction.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

Bill Analysis

SB 631 would allow certain cities with lower populations to extend the geographical jurisdiction of their municipal courts to include fine-only offenses occurring in their city boundaries or up to 200 yards from their boundaries. This amends the current law and changes it from a requirement of a population of 1.9 million or more to a population of 1.325 million or more.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill would allow cities with smaller populations to maximize their current resources better, therefore we support this legislation. The legislation has a positive effect on the principle of limited government by supporting maximization of the government already in place and use of current fiscal resources.
