School districts would be allowed to earn full day attendance for students in optional flexible day programs based on 240 minutes of instruction rather than 360 minutes of instruction. School districts could experience some cost associated with modifying local flexible attendance data collection and reporting systems.

SB 496 seeks to enable optional flexible day programs in school districts to earn a full day of attendance for 240 minutes of instruction rather than the 360 minutes of instruction required to earn a full day of attendance under the existing calculation for the Foundation School Program.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill affirms the principle of limited government by enabling more school districts to allow students to attend school on a flexible schedule in order to complete outside activities related to careers, such as internships, without suffering a loss in funding from the state. For this reason, we support SB 496.
