Bill Caption

Relating to the purchase of certain insurance by public school districts.

Fiscal Notes

No significant fiscal implication to the State.

Local Government

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated. School districts could incur additional costs to expand bodily injury insurance beyond school campuses, but these costs would be voluntary.

Bill Analysis

HB 744 would remove from the relevant statute the phrase "on a school campus". This change would allow the board of trustees of a school district to obtain insurance for bodily injuries for students engaging in an event or training that is school-sponsored at any location, instead of restricting the purchase of insurance for events on school campuses only.

Vote Recommendation Notes

This bill affirms the principle of limited government by eliminating regulation that prevents the school district board from using their own discretion to insure students insurance against bodily injuries while engaging in an event that is not on school campus. For this reason, we support HB 744.
