This legislation would amend the Election Code to establish a process of renewal for volunteer deputy registrar once a term limit expires, including notifying the person of their term expiring; including a renewal application, in a form determined by the registrar, information about any changes in election law that are relevant to the role of volunteer deputy registrar.
As of January 1st of the next year, the registrar shall immediately appoint a volunteer deputy registrar to a new term if the person has signed and filled out the renewal application and returns it to the registrar before the person ’s term expires, as well as an affidavit confirming the person has read and understood any information provided.
A volunteer deputy registrar appointed to a new term
under this section is not required to attend training.
We support this legislation under the personal responsibility and limited government principle. This bill would allow individuals who are subject to expiration as a deputy registrar to renew their position via mail, and be provided with an application form and any changes to the law they should be made aware of that is relative to their role. Upon renewing, the person is not subject to additional training, provided they sign an affidavit acknowledging their understanding of the laws, including the additional changes.
This legislation supports the personal responsibility principle, by providing those up for renewal with the application form to be filled out, as well as the law changes they need to be aware of. It also supports the limited government principle, by alleviating the need for training that the person has already received, so long as they sign the required affidavit.
